Three Games To Open The College Season

NFL betting players will be waiting for their regular season to begin, but first, they can get in on some college action as there are a trio of intriguing games that are worth checking out.

Oregon State TCU Betting – Saturday, 7:45 PM ET

The No.6 Horned Frogs are 13.5-point favorites at a neutral-site affair that favors them (Cowboys Stadium), and they’re incredibly balanced on both sides of the ball. The No.24 Beavers depend largely on the Rodgers brothers for offense, and TCU’s defense has been the best in the nation four times in the last decade. We’re taking TCU to cover in this one.

LSU North Carolina Betting – Saturday, 8:00 PM ET

The line isn’t out yet for the No.18 Tar Heels and No.21 Tigers when they meet at the Georgia Dome, but North Carolina will be without stud defensive tackle Marvin Austin because of a suspension, and he may be just the first of many. The Tigers will be relieved if seven UNC defenders have to miss the game, as is being reported. The defense was what was going to carry North Carolina, because their offense isn’t much better than LSU. Bet on the Tigers in what should be a low-scoring game.

Boise State Virginia Tech Betting – Monday, 8:00 PM ET

In this game played at FedEx Field in Maryland, the No.3 Broncos are a 2-point favorite over the No.10 Hokies, who are struggling on defense and special teams, which is something they pride themselves on. The Broncos have 21 starters back from last year’s Fiesta Bowl team, and they’re out to make a statement in this game. Betting on Boise State should be your choice.

Orange Bowl History

Stadium: Sun Life Stadium 2000 – Present

Location: Miami Gardens, Florida 2000 – Present

Founded: January 1, 1935 – Present

Competitors: ACC/ BCS At Large v. BCS At Large

The Orange Bowl is the third oldest Bowl Championship Series Game in the history of the NCAA Division One. NCAA football betting fans have been able to wager on the Orange Bowl annually in the beginning of January for the last 75 years since January first 1935. College football betting handicappers could expect to see teams from three of the biggest conferences in the NCAA take part in the Orange Bowl annually up until 2000.

These three conferences were the Big Eight, Big East and presently the ACC. Also currently, when an ACC member qualifies for another bowl game, they are replaced by a BCS At Large team in the Orange Bowl.

From 1935 to 1937 Miami Field was the host of the Orange Bowl. In 1938, Miami Field was rebuilt and renamed as the Miami Orange Bowl Stadium. Teams in the BCS had played at Miami Orange Bowl Stadium from 1938 to 1999. In 2000, the Orange Bowl switched locations for a third time to its current location at Sun Life Stadium where it has resided for the last decade.

As well, the Orange Bowl was initially played by members of the Big Eight and Southwest Conferences before they merged to form the Big 12. The Orange Bowl is one of the only iconic games which have been broadcast on all five major American television networks. From 1964 to 1994 NBC broadcast the game, before giving way to CBS for four years from 1995 to 1998. CBS then gave way to ABC who broadcast the Orange Bowl from 1999 to 2006, before FOX took over for five years from 2006 to 2010. The Orange Bowl will now be broadcast for the foreseeable future on ESPN.

Predicting Football Line Moves
When it comes to football betting, there is a fair amount of detail that one needs to consider. For the sports fan new to betting on the NFL here are four things you need to consider when predicting the moves on a football line.
  •    Bet The Favorites Early – One of the main appeals to football betting is that the lines are posted at least a week in advance. For fans that enjoy placing bets on the favorite we suggest you wager on them early in the week. The logic behind this is that the earlier you wager, the higher the payout is when the favorite wins. Wagering later in the week will still get you a cut of the profits but not as much as you could have had at the beginning. The line on the favorite moves lower as the week progresses, and getting your bet in early will see you make the biggest profit.
  •   Prime Time Teams – The prime time teams are those that play either in the late game on Sunday night or are the two teams featured in the Monday Night game. Teams who have big performances in these games have always seen the point spread go against them in their next matchup. Placing your wager earlier in the week similar to betting favorites earlier, will see you make more money.
  •   Predicting Public Patterns – This is one of the easier techniques when predicting when you should wager on a given game. The point spreads movement is intertwined with public opinion. Favorites are more likely to get attention as the week progresses so getting in early is the best move.
  •   Weather – During the latter half of the regular season and the beginning of the playoffs, the weather is the most crucial factor to the point spread. When the conditions are bad, the sportsbooks tend to move the lines toward a lower number since they feel the wind or cold temperatures will affect the outcome.

Horse Handicapping Basics

The popularity of horse betting has grown tenfold since the Triple Crown ended in June. For the new online horse betting enthusiast, here are a few handicapping basics to help you get your feet wet.

1. Read Daily Race Forum – When you want to improve at something it is important to become completely knowledgeable. In Horse racing the way to do this is by reading the daily race forum. In essence the forum tells you all you need to know about conditions for various tracks, horse’s race history, owners and a variety of other important factors. Just being able to understand the DRF is half the battle to becoming a successful horse handicapper.

2. Types Of Races – There are five types of races you will witness any given day at the track. Firstly the stake race is for the best horses to compete in. Handicap races are races in which the participants are assigned weights in order to make the race a level playing field. Allowance races are for horses that are better than handicappers but are aspiring to enter into a stakes race. Fourthly, claiming races are for new potential owners to buy the winning horse in. Finally, maiden races are for horses that have yet to win a race.

3. Betting Options – Horse race betting has become so popular in recent memory mainly because of the plethora of wagering options. Fans can wager on straight bets, which include picking the horse to win out right, picking the horse to place, picking the horse to show and picking the horse to go across the board. Essentially the latter three straight bets allow you to make a profit when the horse finishes in the top three.

Some of the other wagers are known as exotic bets. Here fans can bet the exacta, trifecta, and Superfecta. Each of these exotic wagers requires you to bet upon more than one horse, similar to a parlay bet in football.

Betting Basics: How Do Point Spreads Work?
We continue our series of tips for those of you new to the world of online betting, with some insight into what point spreads are, and just how they work.

Understanding the world of point spreads is vital for betting success. Whether you're betting basketball or football, you better understand the spread.

So, here's how it works. The point spread is essentially a theoretical handicap placed on one team, designed to give the two teams in any matchup an equal chance at winning in the eyes of those indulging in sports betting.

So, for the most part in any given contest, be it football, basketball, or frankly anything in life - one side will be perceived as being better than the other. The point spread essentially evens out this imbalance in terms of betting. It can make both teams very attrative, depending on the lines and the situation.

Let's use a hypothetical: the Lakers are playing the Celtics. The sportsbooks want to even the action out and make the Lakers eight point favorites - typically listed as Los Angeles -8. In this example, the Celtics would be +8. What does this mean? Well, it means that if you bet on the Lakers, they will have to win by more than 8 points in order for you to win your bet. If they beat the Celtics, but the score was 116-109, you're out of luck. This is why in some cases you'll want to bet the underdog, even when you're not thinking they'll win. Unless the winner beats the spread, a bet on that team is not a winning bet.

In the event of a tie on the spread - sometimes called a 'push', all bets would be canceled and funds returned to bettors. In our example, a 116-108 win for L.A. would be a push.

Get it? Good. Go do your research, and play smart.
